Did you ever consider he just doesn't want to go with you?
Maybe he'd rather stay home alone.
Mike
I think you hit it on the head! Although he does have a great time when we get to where we are going.

Phil, great looking dog. You can actually (potentially) train your dog to use the ramp, assuming they like dog treats. Just place some treats along the ramp and have your talk walk up the ramp getting the treats as they go. Do the same for when they leave the van. Keep on repeating this, lessening the number of treats each time. You should probably space this over a couple of days. Eventually your dog should be fine with it. Just a suggestion
He's too smart to fall for that. I think we tried everything and just gave up and now pick him up. He now comes up to the door and when you lean over to pick him up he sits on your arm.
We use basically the same thing in our SMB. It works well, although it can get slippery for humans...I learned that the embarrasing way (although I didn't spill my beer).
If it were me, and it was too steep, it might work better if you attached the top of the ramp to the running boards or lower portion of the van tep. Then the pooches only need to step up the 8" to the van floor.
My dog was also afraid of the ramp in the beginning. I placed it flat on the ground and led him across it a few times to make him comfortable. After that I put on the van and he climb right up.
If it's not too late to chime in...We have a 145 lb Leonberger. She does not like using a ramp and we have been using a pet stair system that is much easier for us to use since we too can use the step and it stores in a much smaller space. Here are some pics.
Those steps are cool, great idea. I just end up lifting our dog (100# Rott) in, he won't use our ramp, which is similar to sdwindansea's. Free for anyone here. Local pickup, north SD County, unless you want to pay for shipping/boxing.
Our dogs love the steps and they sure take up less space than the ramp. I also have a couple of unused ramps in the Fruita Colorado area if anyone is interested.
Love the steps. For folks with differing rig sizes, you can also get a 3 step and 5 step version at handicappedpets.com . The product is otherwise identical to the 4 step one.
