Bus Depot...Add-A-Room?

Has anyone ever tried using a ADD-A-ROOM on the exterior of their 4X4 Sportsmobile? I was at a VW Bus show and saw several used on the 4X4 Syncro VW buses. Actually looked like it might work on the SMB. I found a little info at "The Bus Depot" where they are sold. I was thinking it might be a great way to add a little outdoor enclosed space. Any thoughts?

Re: Bus Depot...Add-A-Room?

As an aside for anyone interested in stuff from Bus Depot, I used them for a few orders back when I had my 88 VW Westfalia and was pleased with their service and products. They are located in the Philadelphia suburbs, not too far from my house.

Re: Bus Depot...Add-A-Room?

You must have been at the Busses by the Bridge show in Havasu City

I'm an old bus guy myself, have not looked at adding one to our Ford econoline, but and at one time, I looked at adding a free standing tent to either the side of rear of our (now retired) Toyota Sienna. Sort of like the Westfalia tents used on 1967 and later 'Westy's', that attached to the passenger side drip rail above the swing out, and on 1968 and later bay window busses, the slider door.

The big consideration is height; You would want something tall enough so you could keep it attached, but still open and close the van doors.

I believe Gowesty.com has others as well that would work.

Fiama has something similar for their awnings, but no floor.

Re: Bus Depot...Add-A-Room?

I bought 3 nylon tarps from REI to enclose my awning for about 25 bucks, a handful cheap carabiners, and a couple of bunji's and bingo, enclosed room. No windows though and stuff comes in under the van. I just wanted to be able to get out of the weather. Sets up in less than 5 min and packs up in a 1.5'x7" diameter mesh bag.

Check out Oztents too. I think they may be tall enough to clear the doors on an SMB
