CB Antenna Whip Mount
I'm having such a hard time figure out where to mount my antenna whip at the rear of my van. I want to mount it at the door hinge but what if I want to unhook the rod on the inside of the hinge to open the door further? Where in the rear can I place it so that it will be completely out of the way? Also, what would be a good mount to purchase? Thanks

Re: CB Antenna Whip Mount
A note of caution - a whip antenna can 'whip' around and break a solar panel (if you have one).

Re: CB Antenna Whip Mount
Spend a weekend in the books, take your ham test, get a 2 meter rig with a 19-inch quarter wave antenna and mount it anywhere wou like. You will be much happier with a VHF FM radio.

Charlie, while I agree with you, the sad fact is that most people don't have Ham radios, so communicating with others in your party may require a CB.
If going solo in remote country, a Ham radio is the only radio that will provide any functionality. If traveling with a group, or within a handful of miles near developed areas (highways, National Parks, National Forests in some cases) a CB radio can be very useful.

Do you have a roof rack? Check this vid out with where they placed the antenna connection. 4:54 point of video

Re: CB Antenna Whip Mount
You could also mount it on the driver's side fender, opposite the stock radio antenna. That's what I'm doing. Just ordered the mount this week: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000WD ... UTF8&psc=1

Re: CB Antenna Whip Mount
Jage, how did you get the antenna wire from the cabin into the engine compartment? I just redid my headliner (wow, that was a LOT of fun) and prewired for the CB and antenna, but don't see any obvious path to get the coax out into the engine area.
I literally just put the visor/headliner screws back in 10 minutes ago, and now you have me all paranoid that I screwed into the coax. Thanks!

A shattered panel? That can make a person mad

Re: CB Antenna Whip Mount
I use the same mount, but next to my vestigal AM antenna mount (I took it off; never use AM/FM radio). I use the same mount (3/8 stud) for a 70cm/2m radio as well as a CB, with a different antenna. I ran the coax up through a space above the firewall, and down into the door joint and then in through there. Then behind the lower dash panel on the passenger side and out below the existing radio mounting location. It's long enough that I can use it in the back, or on the passenger side.
Running the coax from the rear of the van would be a PITA I expect, and I've had bad experience with big old whips hitting the body too.
I would think the plane of the van hood is better for reception than the rear bumper locations, but maybe not enough to make a big difference.
More folks seem to be switching to ham...maybe it'll reach a tipping point soon. Clearly a better choice. I'm lusting after the new Icom 7100 if the friggin' FCC would get going and approve it...looks like a awesome rig. Then I'd have to figure out what to do about an antenna for that. But I could sell my Yaesu 8800.
