Good Samaritan laws are meant to protect us from being sued for helping someone in need. They won't punish you for not helping, not will they ensure your costs are covered. They were originally conceived to encourage medical professionals and others who were trained in CPR and emergency procedures to stop and help strangers on the street. There was a lot of worry in the early days that, should something go wrong, you could be successfully sued for a bad outcome, because medical folks would normally be required to have developed a professional relationship with a patient before treating them. It's been a boon to stranger-help. Whether any of these state laws have evolved further to cover other situations would be a useful research project.
