Earl

Saw this on Expedition Portal and thought it was worth a mention here: http://www.meetearl.com/.

I don't think it would get much use in the SMB but I think it has a lot of potential once you get to the campsite, as well as backcountry exploring. If it actually does what the features say it can do (besides the topo maps; weather, short wave, long wave, FRS/GMRS/MURS, built in solar charging, etc., etc.) then it is only missing an espresso machine and back massager. And bottle opener.

Re: Earl

Seems promising for a dispersed group of people, who have the same system. Kind of like having one walkie talkie unless someone else has the same setup.

Re: Earl

Seems pretty awesome for a hiker, I love my little Garmin GPS76C and Earl seems a lot like that with an FM radio- plus you can read books on it. And solar charger- if I was away from a 6-ton battery on wheels for more than an hour at a time I'd be really interested.

If you already are a happy Garmin user, check out the Garmin Rinos. They are GPS units with radios, although I don't think they do FM (I assume you mean FM broadcast).
