Honda EU2000i question
I have a question for owners of this generator. The unit is 20.1" long according to the specs on the Honda site. I measured my baja box and it's sadly only 19" wide. Also, it has a 1" tab on the interior for the locking mechanism.
Honda is 20.1"w x 11.5"d x 17" h, while the box is 19"w (18 less the tab) x 13"d x 19"h.
Any ideas for creative ways to get the generator to fit in the box? I know the 1000 will fit, but it will not do the job for us based on our expected needs.

I can't help you there. We have a box designed for the 2000. I think that it is now a standard or semi-standard offering, called the "deluxe box".
http://www.aluminess.com/boxes.htm
It is also on the Sportsmobile site now...
http://www.sportsmobile.com/4_4x4bumpers.html
...but I have to say, this boxes makes easy work of holding the 2000.
Can boxes be swapped out?
But even if they can, is the post and hinge setup the same and for enough weight?

Jim,
I actually have a Baja Box as well and an EU2000. The Generator will fit perfectly inside the box if I take off the 1" tab inside for locking the box.
I guess if you can find another way to close and lock the Baja Box while taking the inside tab off, your golden!

....and yes Greg, the boxes can be swapped out. That is one of the things I like about Aluminess system.

Thanks gang. Even without the tab, I am still 1" short. Don't know the vintage of my box: perhaps it was made before the curretn size became "standard". OK, so swapping out the box might be an option.
Anyone know if I can mod the generator in any way to make it a little smaller, like remove a plastic casing? Wishful thinking, probably, but no harm in asking.

Surf,
Is the hinge the same for all boxes? I was under the impression that some hinges had two supports while others for heavier loads have three supports.
Ours has 3.

The New rear bumpers have 3 hinges while the old bumpers had 2. These are one of a few improvements Aluminess did with the rear bumper systems. However, where the box is mounted, it is standard as far as I know. Dave can correct me if I'm wrong.

So although the boxes might be able to be swapped, anyone with an older bumper that might be looking for such a swap to be able to hold a 2000 might need to worry about the carrying capability if they have a two point hinge.

I think 2 hinges are probably enough for a generator, but generator, box, and the rest of the stuff you can cram in there...
They also have supports on the bumper under the arm closures sometime after the 3 hinge mod.
Also the mounts went flush at some point after 2005, I think. My tray has rubber bumps that are the bolt head/nuts and I believe later models have them sunk level or below the floor of the tray.

Just a note. Our 2003 has 3 hinges and oldschool latch pins to lock the swing outs. We also have rubber bumps.
Who knows if this was modified a few years after purchase (late 2004). There's a good chance it was.
We just modified ours from holding a spare to 4 gas cans which is more weight IMHO. No problems.

That probably means that bumper was not original to that van, would be my guess.
