Interested in ham radio?

From time to time I see posts here about amateur, ham radio. With an easy-to-get license you can move your communications to another level, and add a margin of safety to your travels, or just have fun with gadgets. And spend money (but not much more than CB or GMRS/FRS).

If you're interested, this weekend is amateur radio Field Day, June 22-23 2013. Almost all the ham clubs will have pubic events where folks can see ham in action, ask questions, mess with equipment, etc. Some clubs even do licensing classes. You can find local clubs here:

Around me in the Bay Area there are several events, including one on the USS Hornet:

Good chance to exercise your inner nerd.

Re: Interested in ham radio?

Our club is in Santa Rosa CA.
come by and visit if you are in the area. We just set up a 40' high military mast in the middle of a city park. It's pretty impressive.

Or work us on HF & VHF. We will be operating on 20 & 40, 6 & 2m SSB & CW.

Re: Interested in ham radio?

Finally took and passed my technician license. Going to start studying for the general. Now comes the fun part, buying a transceiver. I like the idea of having a remote display head with the actual guts of the unit somewhere else. This unit intrigued me.

What do you all have or recommend?

eHam is a pretty good resource for reviews and classified ads for used gear.

[EDIT: just remember that a Ham radio puts out a lot more power than a CB, so the base unit puts out a fair amount of heat and should have some good airflow or open area around it.]
