Canyonclan-Jeff, What broker did you use for your Progressive insurance in Calif.? I did not know you can go direct. Does your policy say that being plumbed for water, having a built in stove and a built in bed are the requirements for a RV or motor home? In other words, a porta potti is OK. Progressive has the best price for me.

Angel, also check with Costco too. We just bought our SMB a month ago and they had no problem putting our van on our policy. It was a hair under $300 also. If you already have costco its a no brainer. The company is called ameriprise and we have all our rigs with them.

The trick is if you have to jump through hoops if the van is totaled. I know one person who was told she was covered only to find out things changed after she put in the claim. Almost worth getting a lawyer to verify the contract before you sign. I want to hear from folks who have been through this and got paid what they expected the insurance company promises to pay.

Wait! I have insurance through Progressive!
I'd called my regular insurance company, USAA, before we left California and they said they didn't do RV's and forwarded my call to Progressive. I told Progressive I had a portapotti, and it didn't seem to make any difference.
I went around and around with them to make sure I had full replacement coverage for the van as an RV. They knew about SMB and assured me that if I totaled the van, I could get a 100% replacement, a new van up to the end of the 5th year of ownership. Do I have to total my van to find out?
Oh, and I just called a while ago and they bumped up my coverage to take into account my second solar panel.

Maybe others have had no troubles but with my luck Progressive turned me down for the porta pottie issue. Like I posted in the autoramblings special vehicle section, it seems to vary from agent to agent, state to state, business to business I got fed up. I even called back after the first call and got a different answer from a different person at the same place. GMAC said no problem, but who knows. Seems the only true test is to go out and total it. I do know this...if they ask me what I have in the vehicle I will say I have all the crap that's required including the built in crapper...pun intended!

I had the same experiance as Daveb. I was with Progressive and went round and round with them on the porta potti issue and was finally told that the potti was OK. Then I got the complete policy and it read basicly, no porta potti. I called again and was told no permant crapper, no coverage. I cancelled with them and went with National. Didn't want to take a chance on not being covered.
