Powertank CO2 system

Is anyone running one of these instead of onboard air?

http://powertank.com/products/sfID1/13/ ... ductID/205

A buddy of mine with a wheeling background keeps telling me to forget about an onboard air system and get something like this instead.

Re: Powertank CO2 system

I have one of those in my jeep. It’s hard to find a place to refill it out on the road. I use my ExtremeAire Magnum Portable Compressor in the van so I can use it in any rig.

Re: Powertank CO2 system

I still own the one I had in my Land Rover. Works great! I do run the Extreme Air in my SMB since I have air tools in my kit. I keep the Powertank at home to blow off my artwork when I'm framing it, and take it in my Range Rover when I off road.

I have several CO2 tanks. You can get a aluminum 10lb tank for around $100, just under $40 to fill it and $40 for a brass Fixed Spring Regulator. Way cheaper than a PowerTank and nice to have around, even with a compressor on board.

Re: Powertank CO2 system

There was a discussion of this about a year ago. Can't remember just when, but a search should find it.

Powertank CO2 system

I have one, got it for my Jeep. Jeep has 35" tires on 15" wheels. The 10 pound PowerTank can air up from about 15 to 35 psi about 25 times (about 8 air-ups) before it goes empty. I haven't counted how many times it will air up to the higher pressures required on the SMB.

Upsides:

1. MUCH faster. It is not uncommon for me to be finished with all four tires while others are just finishing their first tire.

2. Air pressure is sufficient to put a tire back on the bead. Nice if a valve stem gets broken off and needs to be replaced. I've actually done it and it worked like a champ.

3. Can easily be used to run any air tool. I've used it all over the house. Led me to develop this saying, "see honey, Jeep stuff - it's good for life!"

4. Maintains full pressure all the way to empty.

5. Did I mention it's REALLY fast?

Downsides:

1. An empty PowerTank isn't nearly so useful. The only way to tell how much is left is to weigh it. A bit of a PITA...

2. They are expensive.

3. They cost money to re-fill.

In my mind, if you decide to spend the money, best to get two tanks and one regulator. That way you would always have at least 10 lbs ready to go if you discover on your first tire that you are actually on your last for that tank.

Re: Powertank CO2 system

I have a 15lb that came with the van. I love it and its fast. I can get 4 set of tires from 30 to 70 with some to spare but that is it.

Its good for blowing dust out of the hard to reach areas.

I do have a little plug in for a back up worstcase.
