Bill, where did you get the reflector tape (I take it it is tape)? I have been looking for the same stuff around town, but have not found any locally.
Later note: Now that I have read the whole post, I see it was online!
Should have had reflective tape on the post; it's 5:30am here in the frozen north.

I find the red/white DOT reflective tape at my local trailer supply shop. Not sure if it would help with costs, but I could always pick some up and mail it to you. If there's a decent truck stop in your area, you might try there too.

I went with cut 3M reflective vinyl. Your local sign shop can cut and apply it for you and it comes in many colors. Mine is Black during the day and reflects white when lights hit it. The pattern that it is cut in is a tribal band all the way around the van with our shop logo on the quarter panels. You can see it just starting to work in the below pics:
