Don't think it would be a cheap way to go, but you could buy a reflective car cover and cut up the material.

Quick search result:

Re: To reflect or not to reflect, that is the question

Here's another material sample I requested. There's been some discussion on this particular material in this thread:

This looks like good stuff. Check out this users testimonial from Australia.
I found the link on the http://www.lobucrod.com/ page.

From the manufacturer's website info, it does have some pretty good insulative properties, so if nothing else, it might make a good van body insualtor for you DIY'rs. It's sold at Home Depot, though online only there as far as I can tell.

Just received the samples of this material (one with radiant barrier foil on one side, and one with the same foil on both sides). The one with foil on both sides is marginally thinner that the single sided. So far I'd say it looks very promising. Will still need to check with the CFO and the head sew-mistress to see if the material is sew-able. I have some concerns that it will be too thick and fiberous for my wife's expensive sewing machine. Will also need to check the durability of the foil (unscientific abrasion test).

Will keep everyone posted.

Re: To reflect or not to reflect, that is the question

A reflective uv resistant material will be best at heat reflectance. I have used almost every kind of material in our photo biz for our outdoor shoots. Thick mirror like materials have worked the best for me at shielding our people, gear and vehicle. I have even used a laser thermometer to test a lot of these things and the above holds true for me.

Well, decided to pull the trigger on this material. Due to concerns over sewing it, and not wanting to pay for someone to sew it for us, I decided to go with the double-faced material which I plan on edging with good old fashioned duct tape. Hardly a stylistic solution, but a cheap, easy, practical solution. Next problem was that not only was the material 'online only' ordered from Home Depot, it seems they don't even offer the double faced version. A call to the local Home Depot's Special Order desk was exactly as frustrating as I expected. I didn't really expect success, but I had to try.

Finding the stuff online proved challenging. Found one place that wanted $33 per 4'x6' sheet, which wasn't too badly priced, but shipping for 5 sheets was $90. Was about to call the company directly, but I actually found the double-faced material at Summit Racing ($28.95/sheet), which is shipping it out today for only $11.95 for all five sheets.

Will post pics when complete, and will post my thoughts on it's effectiveness. Will also report on durability of the aluminized facing.

Before you duct tape, if it's fabric on the faces Bish's fabric glue is phenomenal. I've brought an old pair of gloves back to life and recovered my my Trasharoo which had faded severely in the sun.

Any updates on this Herb, Greggd, LenS or anyone else? Been thinking about doing it myself.
