Re: Tools for making a fire.

Firewood, kindling, hatchet, paper, matches.

A little diesel fuel if all else fails.

Charcoal lighter fluid, saw and axe. No longer carry wood. Emerald Ash Borer infestations make it not wise. Use only local wood.

Re: Tools for making a fire.

#1 tool I’ve used for over 30 years is the Sven Saw. When backpacking, I've heard people say "wood too big to break is too big to burn". That's a load of BS.
I also carry a typical hatchet but If I bring wood from home such as almond, I make sure I pack my hand maul. It's a small 20" wedge that I have yet to find on the market since it was purchaced.

For kindling I use power poles if I bring wood, but pine needles and small sticks is generally all I need.

To light the fire I use my trusty cigar lighter which doubles as a soldering gun.

One of these days I'd like to purchase a electric hand chain saw.

All my firewood is dimensional lumber (heat treated to kill bugs) and can be transported even into and out of Canada.

Re: Tools for making a fire.

For a fire starter, I always keep a bunch of "fatwood" in the van. The stuff works great. I also always care a small camp axe and usually bring along a full side axe as well.

Re: Tools for making a fire.

I carry one of these everywhere. In addition to lighting virtually anything on fire quickly, this gizmo satisfies some primal urge for fire and warmth. It is literally a mini flame thrower.

A good hatchet usually comes in handy too.

I, like you, carry a hatchet and a plumber's torch, but i never seem to use the hatchet. The propane torch on the other hand, I LOVE IT! One of my favorite tools. Man love fire. Fire good. Big fire starter better than small fire starter. Make better fire, even if all in man's head.
