Question who uses Fog lights? / Hella 500 / OEM connector->Ford

who uses Fog lights? / Hella 500 / OEM connector-> Ford

Hi all

So I am curious to know how often do people use Fog lights?

I live in the midwest now (just moved here) and if I was camping, and the fog was really bad… I would wait it out.

I am likely going to get an aftermarket front bumper for our forthcoming new Ford, so I would lose the stock Ford fog lights.

If I really should have fog lights…… (?)

For $105 Aluminess will mount a pair of Hella 500 fog lights in the bumper
“ They shoot a short, wide beam that is perfect for cutting through fog.”
and have wire coming off them. Understandably they will not hook them up to my truck.

(I want to leave the stock bumper intact, and not cannibalize the OEM Fog light wiring harness on it, so I can easily put the stock Ford bumper back down the road, if need be)

I’d need to ideally find the correct female (?) connector to connect to the bare wires coming from each Hella 500 so I could plug them in, in place of the OEM stock Ford fog lights.

Anyone know the actual connector Ford uses? (F350, so I know not a Sportsmobile rig, but many wise people here)

Either that or I could buy an OEM wiring harness and splice the Hella 500 wires into it.

Thoughts? Advice? thanks!

Here is the bumper I will likely get:

When I lived near Puget Sound I had a car with fog lights, and used them occasionally. They do help, but only in extremely dense fog, like 'can barely see past the end of the hood' fog. Unless you'll be driving in those conditions a lot, you might get more bang for your buck elsewhere, maybe a set of auxiliary high beams.

Being from So Cal and not used to driving in foggy / snowy conditions I never thought much about having/using fog lights. That is until I found myself in those conditions twice in a 3 day period bringing the van home from Colorado during the storm that hit a couple of weeks ago. I just beat the road closure heading up to Silverton and wasn't super confident I'd make it to Durango before conditions got even worse. Two days later I barely beat the road closures in Flagstaff due to the same storm. Both times I was traveling at night in heavy fog and snow. I learned pretty quickly that using the high beams is not a good idea in these conditions...

I did find that using the fog lights made a big difference for these old eyes that are starting to make driving at night less and less desirable. I don't know how often I'll be using them as I would typically avoid driving in these conditions, but I'm glad I had them when I needed them.

We had hella fog lights in our aluminess bumper and they were pretty useless. In dense fog the added light doesn’t help much and in clear dark nights the added light was minimal at best. I swapped them for some LED Rigid 4inch fog lights and WOW what a difference... they are too bright to use when there is oncoming traffic but when it’s just you on the road they are incredible. FYI they are too bright for fog as the light gets thrown back at you.
FYI, kick the right hand light out to the side a bit and you will have a clear view of any animals etc.

Researching ford part websites for the fog lights for a 2017 F350 shows a 9140 bulb, which means that a 9140 male pigtail should work as a splice for the Hella lights

https://www.amazon.com/MOTOALL-Adapt...5742814&sr=8-3

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HNAT6SQ..._t1_B07HSLS4FW

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07N38MDS6..._t4_B07HSLS4FW

And if wanting to use fog lights while driving on DOT roads, try to find DOT compliant lights.
If DOT doesn't matter, consider amber lights from bajadesigns - https://www.bajadesigns.com/

or KC - https://www.kchilites.com/light-type/led.html

or lightforce - https://www.lightforce.com/en_us/products

Holy cow Chris - that is amazing - thanks so much!!

I fear that I made a mistake in not realizing + mentioning that the Ford fog lights will be LED - as I ordered the Ford LED package - and that makes all the bulbs LED except the vanity mirror bulb in the visor, and the license plate bulb, as far as i know. (pretty confident)

so is it easy to know what LED fog bulb Ford uses with the optional LED package at build?

thanks.

PIAA and only few others make DOT legal fog/driving lights. Expensive but worth it

Mine are these

https://thmotorsports.com/9998929-ri...iABEgLVJfD_BwE

I picked them up on some clearance for around 350 or 400. We often find ourselves pulling into camp super late and the type push through the night when on road trips. After owning them and when compared to the Hellas I would have paid double and been thrilled.

Also, before replacing the Hellas I put in the high output bulbs to make them brighter.. it helped but I still wasn’t happy. I still have the Hellas and would be happy to sell them to you at a good price. Feel free to PM me if you are interested

Damn! They are on sale for 89.83 on the rigid website. Type in part number 63311. I’m assuming that’s each, but IMO that’s a sick deal
