Wireless Indoor/Outdoor thermometer recommendation?

Sorry -- haven't had any luck finding threads on this with the search tool, so here goes...

Can anyone recommend models (and sources) for wireless indoor/outdoor thermometers? I want to mount the indoor unit on the B-pillar, passenger side, so I can glance at it as I drive; lacking an Aluminess bumper and spare tire carrier, I hope to put the transmitter inside the front license plate bracket, same as LenS (though his Chevy van's bracket looks deeper than the Ford van bracket).
  • I bought an inexpensive Accurite from Lowe's (sorry, don't know the model) last fall, and it bit the dust in relatively short order (outdoor function quit) so it's just an "indoor thermometer" now. Perhaps there is a more durable Accurite model to suggest?
    [/*:m:1g6bhat6]
  • The Oregon Scientific EMR812 looked promising (basic two temps, no clock, no weather station, just nice big numbers) but the indoor unit is 4"x4.5" x 1.25" thick, so mounting it might be a challenge (as well as unsightly -- it looks HUGE on the B-pillar)
    [/*:m:1g6bhat6]
  • This year's basic Radio Shack I/O wireless thermometer indoor unit is bigger still (yet with smaller numbers -- lots of spare plastic).[/*:m:1g6bhat6]

Suggestions? I want to get this procured and installed prior to heading to the Moab area in April.

Re: Wireless Indoor/Outdoor thermometer recommendation?

We use an older Oregon Scientific EMR812 - temp only, local and 3 remotes. In the van we use two remotes, one outside and one in the refrig.

The outside one is mounted inside the spare on the back door and is used mostly for overnight lows. When the sun hits it, it is not even close. We use the ScanGuage for outside air temps when we are driving.

The refrig sensor is mostly for peace of mind. And it is an old habit. Our old camper had a propane refrig and it would not hold temperature. The Norcold DC refrig in our van is great by comparison and holds temps in any weather we've thrown at it.

The size of the unit means it is mounted back in the living spaces, not where it can be seen while driving.

Re: Wireless Indoor/Outdoor thermometer recommendation?

Oops, yes -- it's the EMR812* that BestNest.com has on sale -- seems that Oregon Scientific may be discontinuing it.

I certainly like the idea of having two sensors -- one outside, and one in the ice-chest.

How/where did you mount the large interior unit? I was thinking of using double-sided industrial strength velcro, but am unsure how well that will stick when the interior of the van soars, parked closed up in the Texas summer sun.

Thanks!

Re: Wireless Indoor/Outdoor thermometer recommendation?

Since the main unit mounts with 1 screw (it slips over the head and then sets down to retain itself) we have a couple of screws for it. One in the back near our dinette/couch/lower bed, one up front where we can see it from outside the open side doors, and at night we take it up and lean it against the penthouse so we can see it from the bed.

I think it only came with one remote unit and we bought some extras. Of course, we have a 2nd unit in our home, one in the backyard, one in the garage, one upstairs in the bedroom. The main unit sits on the mantle and can be seen when we are in the living room.

Re: Wireless Indoor/Outdoor thermometer recommendation?

Thanks, Jage.

I guess I should have searched on "temperature" rather than "thermometer."

To summarize that thread, and the threads it links to:

Models:
  • Accu-rite 00782 from Wal-mart. Greg In Austin didn't like it -- said it ate batteries.[/*:m:3qckfe2j]
  • Accu-rite 00754. SDWindAndSea likes this unit.[/*:m:3qckfe2j]
  • Accu-rite 00604RX from Wal-Mart. Greg in Austin was (is) pleased with this unit.[/*:m:3qckfe2j]
  • Oregon Scientific EMR-812. This is the unit that Jage, Mike (Ford_6L-E350) and Jack (yvrr) have. Big numerals, and a big interior unit.[/*:m:3qckfe2j]
  • Oregon Scientific RAR-323. This is the choice of LenS and it's what I've had in my house for about 15 years. It has worked flawlessly. A "John Deere" branded version is available at Amazon Marketplace for about $20.00; this appears to be the only version available.[/*:m:3qckfe2j]

Mounting locations for sensor:
  • Inside the front or rear plastic license plate holder[/*:m:3qckfe2j]
  • Inside the Aluminess spare tire holder (mixed results reported)[/*:m:3qckfe2j]
  • Underneath the PH edge[/*:m:3qckfe2j]
  • under the hood [/*:m:3qckfe2j]
  • strapped to the grill (don't know if this was done or contemplated.)[/*:m:3qckfe2j]

Interior unit mounting:
  • Velcro (Jage, LenS)[/*:m:3qckfe2j]
  • screws (Mike)[/*:m:3qckfe2j]
  • several people noted that they have multiple mount locations, so they can move the interior unit to the PH, the body of the van, or the cab area.[/*:m:3qckfe2j]
  • nobody seems to mount the interior unit to the B-pillar. The pillar directly aft of the side door (C-pillar?) or the shelf behind the driver in a "50" layout seem to be common locations for the unit when driving.[/*:m:3qckfe2j]

I think that's about it so far.

The Oregon Scientific EMR-812 is indeed discontinued. BestNest.com has them on discount for about $25.00, plus about $10 in shipping. The website says 34 in stock.

Any other suggestion for model or mounting locations to add to the list?

Thanks!

Re: Wireless Indoor/Outdoor thermometer recommendation?

I use the LaCrosse brand.

I have the remote inside the spare tire and I prop this up in the dash. It has a wall mount option however we didn't choose to use it. I can tuck it away if I am concerned about theft.

It works fine and I got it reasonably cheap off Amazon. It is reliable and has a large display. The only downside is that it has a large format. If I were to replace it, I'd probably get a slightly smaller version however it's nice that the kids can see it without asking me how hot it is......

Re: Wireless Indoor/Outdoor thermometer recommendation?

We are still very happy with our choice.

We mounted both units using the 3M removable Velcro and both are holding like a champ.

Where that first model ate batteries, I think we have oy changed the batteries on the second model and we are approaching the 2 yr mark. Much better!
