1990 GMC 2500 4x4 conversion
Hello to everyone! I've been interested in a dual purpose camper van for quite a while now, and just picked up a 1990 GMC 2500 conversion, which was set up for a handicapped driver. When I got it the lift had already been removed, but it still has a lift/slide/rotate Braun unit under the driver seat. It also has an electric folding bench seat/bed at the back of the van, and a fibreglass roof.
I live in a snowy climate, and have never been fond of RWD vehicles in the winter. I'll be converting this van to 4wd in the near future, but it doesn't seem like many people do this to the GMC vans. I would have preferred a Ford, but wasn't about to pass this one up, it was a great deal. I'm planning on using the running gear from a 1 ton 4x4 pickup, probably Ford, but I will go with Chevy or Dodge if the price is right. I'll be replacing front and rear axles, not just lifting the rear to match the front.
I plan to use it for camping and for towing my racecar long distances with multiple people in the van. I need at least 4 seats, I have 5 with the current configuration which is better, and I'll probably stay with that. Looking at building a small kitchen module to go behind the driver and adding some cabinets to the rear of the van. Also going to build a roofrack and beefy front bumper, to go with the lift needed for 4x4. Lastly, I want some form of furnace to keep the inside of the van hospitable for winter camping.
