Re: 7.3 Instrument Cluster Tachometer

After posting, I met w my custom shop guys.

Given the ECM problems, we decided to keep my 99 dash and customize it for the electronics I want to add (8-9" DIN Alpine, etc). I have to change the color of the dash, anyway; so, covering new fiberglass add on's is no big deal.

That still leaves the tach issue. I'm now in the boat w the rest who want to put a F350 diesel cluster in.

I'm driving to Grand Prairie today for some body parts. I'll see what they say about a cluster switch, which is not the same as a cluster ****, which is about what this may turn into.

Re: 7.3 Instrument Cluster Tachometer

ok, heres the diagrams. sorry for the mess, but ill try to explain it so others may follow suit. the e350 diagrams are for an 03 with the 7.3, and the truck diagrams are for a 1999 with the 7.3.

first thing, take note that plug a on the van is different than plug a for the truck. this is the same for all 3 plugs from each vehicle. gotta match them up with shape. theres also info that has to be figured out since it was wrong with these diagrams. this is where you just have to color match wires. as you can see by my chicken scratch, i wrote pin and plug number from truck diagrams above where it was to go on the van plugs. i also made note of the ones i didnt use. the key one being the seat belt indicator. its so nice not having to hear that thing when your in and out of the truck up camping

its been quite a while since i did this mod, so its far from fresh in my head, but all answer any question i can. please note that the only thing not working in my cluster is the light that indicates that the cruise control is on. cc still works, i just dont have the lead on the correct one for the light to let me know its on.

e350 plug A

e350 plug B

e350 plug C

f250 plug A

f250 plug B

f250 plug C

Re: 7.3 Instrument Cluster Tachometer

shenrie: Thanks! And could you post the model year and engine of the E350 recipient and model year and engine of the F350 donor? In fact to keep things clear for all to read, could all contributors to this thread do the same? That way cluster wiring/sensor differences in MY and engine type will be exposed.

Its not quite that bad----but from the outside looking in I'm sure it appears so!

Shenrie those drawings make a lot of sense---to me anyway.

Once I've digested them, perhaps compared them to my EVTM's I'm sure it will make more sense.

OTOH it figures the '04 and later had tachs---I own an '03!

Re: 7.3 Instrument Cluster Tachometer

it doesnt seem like much to digest at first, but once you have the cluster out and start toggling between the diagrams matching up plugs, it does get rather crazy.

shoot, big ole duh. sorry, i meant to put that info in there to begin with as its somewhat important, lol. ive updated the original post, but the diagrams are for a 03 e350 with the 7.3, and a 99 f250 with the 7.3. i also cant explain why one of the diagrams turned blue...i assume it was when i was converting them from adobe to jpeg files.

i am sorry for the delay. i wanted to get new diagrams without all my notes. there was definitely some trail and error during the swap and my notes just kinda clutter up what was already a confusing project.

Wont work. The 2014 cluster (all '05 vans or '04 PSDs) use the CAN-BUS to send info to the cluster, which has its own controller to break-up the CAN-BUS data stream. '97-'04 clusters have individual circuits for each gauge and they are PWM controlled.

You need to find the same generation F-series cluster, which would be '99.5-'02 with the same type of motor (diesel, V10, or V8) otherwise the pulse count for the Tachometer won't match unless you also add a signal converter.

Re: 7.3 Instrument Cluster Tachometer

OK, so who's going to start the master F350 Instrument Cluster into E350 thread?

I am not as smart as you guys, so it won't be me. And I need explicit photos and true paint by number instructions to follow.

In that latter regard, check out Trey's step by step video "how to" on Torque Pro which is an alternative way to show rpm:
