80's westfalia pop top on E150?

I've seen the newer westfalia tops on full size vans, has anyone ever tried the older 80,s tops? Pics?

Re: 80's westfalia pop top on E150?

My 1991 VW Westy has a pronounced curve to the front edge of the top and it is really protected and sealed from driving rain by the forward cargo tray. The back edge and hinging accommodates the curve of the vw roof. Not familiar with the roof profile of a Ford Van.... but I know its way too small for our new Sprinter

I'd look for a Eurovan top. been done a couple of times here and fits well. I think the Westy top has been talked over before and it is narrow.

Welcome to the Forum Spenard! You must be in my side if town with that name.

Re: 80's westfalia pop top on E150?

Here are a few photos from a van that I was looking at a couple years ago. This is the older body style which I believe is wider at the rear by 2-3" or so than the newer body style which tapers more significantly. Hope this helps with the visualization a bit. Based on the way it fits I'm guessing it would be doable but would require some fitting. Do a search - I think someone just put one on a Chevy van in the last year or two, but I don't recall if it was a eurovan or vanagon top.

I was a Bus pilot for ten years. I like the Vanagon's also.

But, I don't like the way their pop tops fit on the US vans.

Close, but no cigar.

Just my opinion.

Re: 80's westfalia pop top on E150?

But, on a good note, with the pop top being a bit more narrow than the van, one could fab some brackets for the awning that attach to the roof instead of the gutters and fab some brackets that attach to the roof on the drivers side so one can put a ten foot piece of 4" PVC with end caps to store the fishing poles or other tent poles for shade over the picnic table or just add a second awning.
The end result would be having both sides tucked in tight instead of having the awning hanging over the roofs edge. There's always a silver lining.

Could you split the top in the middle to widen it to the van, then reinforce the new piece with plywood sandwich or something and recoat the entire thing with fiberglass?
