Dual Batteries?

Kind of covered in other posts but as a different setup. I want to run dual batteries but not really as a house and chassis system. I want the dual for cap when plowing/winching/jump starting/inverter do not plan on running a microwave or AC and will have a small Honda Gen with me when I camp. Still looking at a Xantrex Prosine 2.0 but will I still need a isolator for the second battery? Have high cap Alt (220 amp) so that is not a problem. I also want both Batteries when starting.

Not sure if this applies..

I use the hellroaring battery isolator /combiner:
http://www.hellroaring.com/bic75300.php
Check out the features chart.

Hellroaring lets you keep one for backup or combine them for the winch or combine them to start up if the first one is dead..

We fitted in a second larger Group 31 Optima Blue Top on the passenger side in the engine bay.

I use this same exact setup on the Landcruiser.

Re: Dual Batteries?

If you want to have two batteries for starting (like the 6.0 have from Ford) then you just parallel them, no isolator needed.

If you want a separate 12v system (like most SMB's have for the camper) for use with the inverter then you should have an isolator to prevent running down the starting battery when using the inverter.

If you want to run two batteries for starting, and use the same two batteries for the inverter then you are playing with fire. The inverter can run the batteries down and you can't start the engine to recharge. The standalone generator takes a little longer to recharge so you can start it.

I guess what I'm saying is: It is not clear how you need the batteries hooked up. But, I'm thinking first option is what you have in mind.

Re: Dual Batteries?

I have run a inverter from my single battery before as I only run it for about 2 hours at a time to charge the computer or watch a movie and usally start the van while doing so. I was also using the van engine for heat off and on. Now with the Webasto I will be running that instead. and wanted to have Duals for more reserve. I am also adding the Gen (EU2000iA) and I am trying to weigh my options. I could run as a Chassis/House system in the summer and as a chassis only in winter when using the plow more but will a 1,2,1/2 switch handle the amps?

Re: Dual Batteries?

You could look at the Sure-Power battery separators. Model 1315-200 is bidirectional (charging either battery will charge the other after the first is charged, and it has a switchable Aux Start feature. You can put in a switch to have the Aux (House) battery assist the starting battery. But, you won't be able to drain the starting battery with the inverter.

Just make sure you run large enough wire to handle the 200A during starting. At least 2 ga wire.

Re: Dual Batteries?

My SMB installed wires (2007 battery + Invertor add) are 2/0.

Also the BlueSea 400a might be better quality than the SurePower. I've got posts about it somewhere round here.

Re: Dual Batteries?

2/0 is some big wire!

I've used it for 200A, but in runs of 100' and more and for continouos power. For a short runwith intermittent use, 2ga (same as quality jumper cables) is adequate. What does Ford use for battery cables?

2/0 will certainly work. But, it is much harder to work with and alot more money.

Re: Dual Batteries?

You could use the Ford cables. Pretty cheap last I checked, and should be more than adequate.

Re: Dual Batteries?

I will use all custom cables. Just looking for advise/ideas on switches and or inverters.
