Re: Dude With Van's First Homebuild

The guy I get my biodiesel from said I should find a mechanic that specializes in auto computer programming. He got his 7.3L tweaked and gets 26mpg running biodiesel. I just don't see how that is happening...

Re: Dude With Van's First Homebuild

Had a pure stock '02 F250 with the 7.3L. Average in the 16 mpg area.

Have an '01 Excursion with the 7.3L. Ford AIS intake, Magnaflow exhaust, Stealth SRP1.1 High Pressure Oil Pump, FASS fuel filtration/pump system, computer tune, BTS transmission. Flat highway driving on cruise control I can get 18mpg. Runs better than any other diesel truck I've ever owner, but 18mpg is the best I've gotten.

Can't see how 26mpg is achievable in real world driving conditions. Maybe he changed tires sizes and didn't recalibrate his speedo?

Re: Dude With Van's First Homebuild

Has anyone used this peel & stick roof underlayment as a sound deadener instead of fatmat or dynamat?

Watched a video where a guy used this instead and got great results, so I thought I'd give it a shot. It's aluminum on one side and a sticky rubber on the other. Any experiences with it?

Re: Dude With Van's First Homebuild

After layering the floor with EZ Cool, I put a layer or rigid foam insulation on top to add some r-value. The town I live in has a horrible selection of insulation, so I just decided on this stuff and will then put 1/2" sandyply on top. I haven't tested out it's r-value yet, but its cheap and easy to work with

I decided to keep my floor floating for now since I really don't know what kind of finishing I want done on it. Since I'm constantly loading and sliding heaving gear, I need something extremely durable. I thought about carpet, but not sure if I want that since I'll be doing the sides with carpet. Anyways, the floor layering consists of...

EZ Cool
1/2" R-Max insulation
1/2" sandyply (hardwood plywood)

Re: Dude With Van's First Homebuild

Here is a good way to determine the angles of your van when making sidewalls and flooring. Thanks to whoever it was that showed this idea on this forum. Works extremely well and pretty easy too!

I used 1/4" sandeply for the sidewall and headliner. A bit pricey but I thought maybe hardwood would help insulate a bit better

I then glued some Roxsul on the wood and carpeted it

By the way, Yakima's Swingdaddy bike rack is awesome!

Re: Dude With Van's First Homebuild

So, thanks East Coast Build's pictures (bhodi) I finally decided on the bed I think will work best for my camper/work van.

Pretty simple build, but allows to keep all the space you need while still having a bed for 2.

If you're wondering why everything is black, my interior design is to mimic road cases for sound gear. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about the flooring (thinking blacklight but for now, everything is going be black with aluminum trim with splashes of color for the bed.

Re: Dude With Van's First Homebuild

Box is 24"D x 76"W x 12"T
The lid is two parts. Bottom hinged lid is 18" and the top is 24" with 6" piece screwed on the bottom of it to compensate for the space from the bottom lid. The top lid slides off the bottom to make the bed. I hope you can understand what I just said, ha

I made it 12" high for two reasons. Just low enough for my 6'2" body to sit up on it and to accommodate the the plastic box you see in the far right. I have two more I'll be putting in there to act as support when someone is sleeping on the wood.

Re: Dude With Van's First Homebuild

Been having a hard time finding reasonably priced foam, so I just bought some camping foam for $32. It's 72x24x3...perfect size for $32. I will later be cutting it to size and making covers for them.

The support legs are hinged yet, but this is how it will look when pulled out as a bed. These legs (3) support the cantilever.
