I don't doubt this statement at all and have never driven a V10 van. In fact, my V8 engine was also listed in the con side of my white board list.

What i can comment on is my experience with the exact same year and engine as Rockman (2006 with 5.4l). For reference, my other van is a 4x4 G30 van with a 6.5l diesel normally aspirated. That van is no powerhorse, so my views are likely skewed.

On my drive back from Long Beach to Portland, covering Grapevine and Siskiyou summit, with the new high top, I never felt underpowered and could go as fast as I needed. Yes, I did downshift a couple times and hit 4300rpm. Yes, it does sound loud at that rpm although all research indicates it's perfectly fine and nearing the HP sweetspot. Total weight was 8000lbs, and still running stock tires. For my needs, the 5.4l proved to be good enough so far. This is highly dependent on the individual, and certainly over discussed in many posts, but I figured my experience was worth noting.

I'll continue to evaluate the 5.4 performance as I add more weight for the buildout.

I don't think the 5.4 is gutless, but it's no rocket ship in stock form. I put a 5-star tune on my old van with a heavy wood interior and a CCV pop top. It weighed about 10k loaded and it was still strong enough in most situations other than steep mountains. Larrie has it now and might like to weigh in.
I'm not a diesel fan only because I don't want to maintain one so I recently bought a v10. It's like cheating. It's unbelievably strong. All I'm saying here is that comparing a diesel/v10 to a 5.4 is apples to oranges. In the grand scheme of things the 5.4 is still a big, powerful engine capable of almost any job. And they run forever.

Thanks for that report @NeatVan, that is helpful. and I agree. I have put all 110k miles on my van from Mexico to Canada, Cali to Florida, and never considered it underpowered. (again, I was getting 20-21mpg fully loaded until the new suspension and slightly larger tires)

and Im really on the same edge as your were with your whiteboard.

I have contacted MDS and although his setup looks awesome, and way closer, I dont think I can do a 24".
