How to get dome light cover back on

I feel like an idiot, but I cannot get the front dome light cover back on. Last time I change the bulb, I got it back on with some effort, but I have tried for a while now and cannot get the clips to stay. Is there some trick? I'm tempted to pound it, but don't want to break it.

Any ideas?
