INTERIOR WALL MATERIAL

Hi all:

Thinking ahead I am contemplating using 1/4" plywood for my interior walls (not the ceiling as CCV will probably do the penthouse top). I was thinking of using spray glue and a very thin carpeting that I saw at Home Depot by Beaulie of America called Perfection Grey. The carpeting would only be on the large plywood areas NOT on the cabinets and doors.

I'm thinking this would "soften" the interior relative to sound bouncing around and, since my van is silver, the light grey colour would go well.

I recently saw a Sportsmobile with a fixed hugh top that had this around the top and it looked good. Can anyone tell me if they have done this, what they used for carpeting and if spray glue will be adequate to hold it fast to the plywood?

Thanks,

jjtwister

Re: INTERIOR WALL MATERIAL

i used 1/4" plywood and in some spots luan (depends on what i grabbed each trip)

and i used that exact carpet. perfection grey from home depot. it looks great, was very easy to cut and bend around most things.

i used spray77 from 3m. i probably could have used some others that were cheaper. i covered the sidewalls as well as the bulkhead wall and bulkhead door.

i havent done the ceiling yet. i will either use the same carpet or another material but i will definitely use a roll/brush on contact cement as wvvan suggests. it not only will be cheaper but it will be easier to use as you can be more accurate with its application and not get or worry about overspray.

home depot sells spray 77 for $10 a can but walmart has it for $8 a can.

i really like the perfection grey carpet...it looks excellent for my build and seems very durable and easy to work with.

i wouldnt use it for my floor in my build however only because i live in my van full time and i dont think it would hold up to my office chair and weight. i currently have bare plywood floor for now until i decide how to finish it once the rest of the build is done..

i applied the spray 77 to the substrate (1/4" ply) as well as the carpet. wait for a minute or two for it to tack up. then apply...i had a small wooden roller from the fatmat sound deadening material i used and i used it to smooth out the carpet...a plastic framing triangle (speed square) also came in handy to smooth things out and force the carpet into corners for real crisp edges.

Re: INTERIOR WALL MATERIAL

we have done many convertions over the last 20 years and we are using a suade with a 1/4 in. foam back (sold in verious colors). Its lite and easy to work with. Keystone and upolestery fabric outlet carrys it. It gives the walls an elegant look. Keystom brothers have the glue as well as the fabrics we use for the headliner. hope this helps.

From what I have found, the glue to use is no longer available in CA.

Re: INTERIOR WALL MATERIAL

How did you secure the lower wall sections? Sheet metal screws?

Re: INTERIOR WALL MATERIAL

Toolman your interior looks as nice as your exterior.

I too am a big fan of rivnuts aka nutserts and have used them for many things on my van build.

I have also been using those christmas tree plastic push pins a lot.
They work really well with wood on the side and rear doors and for walls and even ceilings.
Just drill a hole and push them in. They hold great, look decent and are removable.

I made my door panels out of 1/4 plywood and used the pins to hold them on. I also covered them with carpet and I always use 3M Super 77 spray glue for all my gluing needs.

WELL DONE!!!
