Re: new van build

Great looking conversion. DO you know what your top weighs vs a SMB top? I am always looking to shed weight and the SMB top seems "heavy" relative to its size.

Re: new van build

Spomo,
It really depends on the style of top you go with and if it is new or not. This build is a used top from the junkyard, these tops weigh between 200 to 250 pounds. When I order them new I can order them built lighter, it really depends on what company I get them from and if I request them to be lighter. The builders do not pay attention to weight and thickness for most builders but if I spec out a top to be thinner they will do it and I can get the tops down around 150 pounds. My hardware is a little heavier the smb because I use two sets of lifting scissors and they are beefier than smb and all of my tops are electric lift, there is no option for a manual lift. When our tops are popped up you can have a couple of people walk around on them with no problem at all they are that stout. I am not sure what a smb top weighs but I know they are heavy I repaired one with broken hardware and I felt like it weighed 400 plus pounds trying to manually lift it up with the hardware broken. My tops are also a lot bigger than a smb they are longer and taller than a smb and the canvas is pushed out closer to the edge of the van allowing our bed to be wider and longer and it naturally makes a shelf or a bed for a child to sleep in over the driver and passenger seats. Most of my tops raise around 40 inches unless requested to raise to a lower height. This combined with a already raised roof gives you a ton of head room, again depending on the top but sitting in bed you you can have as much a 4 feet of head room. If you are interested in doing a replacement top on your smb I could build a composite replacement top that would be under 100 pounds and replace the smb top and reuse the old smb canvas.

Re: new van build

That is actually a cj8 scrambler on 35s it is a bit of an optical illusion the fenders have been lifted up 7 inches giving it the illusion
of having more lift than it actually has. It has about six inches of lift but with the fender massage on the front and rear it looks more like 14 inches but still keeps the cg down low. When it is done it will run 42s or 44s and fill the wheel wells nicely. It runs full width truck axles injected 318/727/dana 300. I am building it for my brother.
