Overland Van (2WD)

Installed a key lockable, two drawer cabinet near the passenger side cargo doors to safety store my outdoor photography gear. This cabinet is accessible from both inside or outside of the van, provides additional counter space and has a hidden area for a small waterproof fire-resistant chest for Cash & Passports.

^^ Like the cabinet idea! I built a hidden, false-front compartment in my van to hide my photo gear. It's not locked, but I figure if nobody even knows its a compartment then it's pretty safe. I hope...

I'd love to see other pics and details of your inside build. Looks nice from the glimpses above.

Tpowell,
Well done on your "security" compartment in the back of the bottom drawer - your idea has motivated me to evaluate the possibility of something similar in an existing cabinet. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the kind words.

Back in 2015 I got to live out one of my worst nightmares. I had a day where the personification of my anxiety sprouted legs and ambled right into the middle of a Coast Guard Change of Watch (COW) Ceremony that I was photographing.

Mr. Anxiety-Incarnate snuck into a Banquet Hall, and like a plague, snuck right back out and took something precious with him. Never to be seen again was $15,000 worth of Canon cameras and lenses that was stored in my gear bag.

That’s right, I lived out the photographer’s terrifying dream equivalent to showing up to a high school class naked.

It wasn’t all bad news. My insurance company eventually paid me for most (75%) of my stolen gear and I learned a whole lot about what I was doing wrong and what I was doing right when it came to keeping my gear safe and secure while shooting an event or parked on location.

Nice! Did you make or have this fabbed? I bought a safe for my van, to store passport and wallet and important paperwork. But clearly need more secure storage for photography and fly fishing gear.

Thanks Bob

I made it or rather re-purposed it. The cabinet was originally designed for a different van build out. It’s constructed of welded 1” steel square tubing and coated with U-POL Raptor Tintable Urethane Spray-On Truck Bed Liner. Actually this whole project started with another van (1994 E-350 Cargo) and migrated over to my current van project.
