Question about Penthouse

Hi,
Is there anywhere you can buy just the Penthouse Top ? New or used?
After reading posts about building your own SB I like the idea, since you can layout the unit to your own needs.
Thanks,
ED

Re: Question about Penthouse

You can just have the PH installed at any of the SMB locations for a late model van. You probably want to check in advance if there is any question about the age or model of the van.

Used who knows. They just wind up in junkyards with other old junk as far as I know. The value drops off sharply after so many years and there are all kinds out there whose badges have fallen off and that have disappeared into ignominy.

Re: Question about Penthouse

We initially had SMB Indy just put the top on our van last spring. The cost was $5,462. We used it for the summer and had them do the interior over the winter. They were able to get the top on in about one full day.

Re: Question about Penthouse

I'm basically on the same quest right now - trying to locate a top. I want a pop-up top, not a raised roof. The only price I've been able to find on the SM PH top is around $5000. Am I reading that right?

Re: Question about Penthouse

Had mine installed yesterday at SMB Indiana.
Here is the top upside down pre install:

The cost is $5195.
If you pay in cash there is no sales tax in Indiana.
At least thats what they told me and I wasn't going to argue with them.

I dropped the van off at 7:00am and they were done by noon.
In that time they also installed a window.

My install went faster than normal since the van is mostly empty.
SMB also provided a hotel room and a rental car at no charge.

That's a whole lot of cash.

Re: Question about Penthouse

It was by far the most cash I've ever had my hands on before. It was a eight hour drive to Huntington and every ten minutes I was making sure the money was still in my pocket. As if it had somehow magically disappeared since last time I checked. Made me more than a little uncomfortable.
I guess I'll have to cross off "bag man" from my list of possible career choices.
It was worth it though. What I saved in sales tax paid for the new side window.

Re: Question about Penthouse

We used the same method, $$$$$$, in March when we got our top installed at SMB-I. I really wanted to get rid of the cash as soon as I got there.

When I dropped the van off I ask them if they needed a deposit...say 50% or so. The reply was: "Naw we don't need one, we have your van".
