Shift kits

Can anyone recommend a good shift kit for my 2001 E-250???? I have the 5.4 Triton gas motor and the 4R100 transmission (I think). I do a fare amount of light to medium towing (3000-6000lb trailers) and want something that will improve the performance... Thanks

Re: Shift kits

Providing the year of the van would help in identifying the transmission.

Also, what results are you looking for from a shift kit?

Re: Shift kits

I had a shift kit installed in mine when they rebuilt my 2001 r4100. After 20,000mi it still shifts firm and "Squeeks" when shifting under hard throttle.

5 Star Tuning, ask for Mike. Good luck, you can't go wrong!

Re: Shift kits

I’ve been told the squeak is from the torque converter. Give “Monster Transmissions” a call and ask about a 4R100 shift kit.

What is a shift kit and what do they do?

Re: Shift kits

Probably more than you're looking for, but my Excursion has a BTS (Brian's Truck Shop) 4R100 transmission in it, and it's phenomenal. Firm, strong shifts.

Re: Shift kits

Larrie,
“Shift Kit” can mean a lot of things but in this context its things like aftermarket internal transmission valves, solenoids, oil passageways, clutches, and computer chips etc.
Rebuild kits like the “Monster” kit have ALL the parts you need to completely overhaul the transmission and at the same time upgrade any problem OEM parts to hopefully make the transmission bullet proof.

Re: Shift kits

I put a valve-body shift kit in my previous 5.8L/E4OD E350. It was good improvement.

I added the Banks TransCommand to my current V10/4R100. Just as good for shift quality, but also improves torque converter lockup strategy. However, for the weights I pull I wanted even firmer shifts, so I raised it even more with the Predator, which also allowed my to raise shift points and the rev limiter. The Predator can increase shift firmness on its own, but it doesn't change the torque converter strategy like the Banks Transcomand. With the electronics and programming, I don't feel a valve-body kit is needed.
