And yes in good ol' CA, CARB (Ca air resources board) will not let you put in an auxiliary tank in a gas engine. Diesels still have the ability to have auxiliary tanks.
I self installed an aux tank in my now gone 1994 FZJ80. Had an issue once at smog, probably in 2008, when the tech saw the second tank he threatened to fail me. But said it wasn't in the system yet.
