The pressure of the engine exhaust, if run to charge the batteries, could create to much pressure and turn off the heater.

I wondered the same thing. If inserted into the back of the 90 degree bend of the tailpipe, would there be pressure? or venturi effect ? Either way, its surely not desirable to effect the heater function.
I proposed poking through the rocker panel which is double wall, and erik pointed out that the air in there is the same as the air in the wall of the cabin, so therefore an exhaust leak within that section would be bad.
