If i remember right, Advanced 4wd in Salt Lake City did a lot of solid axle 4x4 conversions on astro's and safaris. Being from Wyoming, it could be one of them.

A solid axle conversion makes sense, I like it! Pretty good mid--size-mini vans, rear wheel drive.

I owned an semi-rare all-wheel drive optioned GMC Safari (up-trimmed, rebadged Chevy Astro) for about 125k miles, sold it with over 200k on the clock, one of the few vehicles my ex-wife couldn't kill (although she gave one heck of a try, lol!) I found the 4.3 V6 almost indestructible. The chassis wasn't bad, either, but I did have some power door lock and window issues, door handles braking, small stupid stuff.

The factory AWD Astro vans are the IFS type, with CV joints. I considered lifting mine, but you couldn't do it very easily, and even if I did, the 4wd components are real light-duty (the viscous coupling went bad early on, so I was all over, in and under this thing). Great in snow and ice, just not much ground clearance.
