1995 E150 cargo van DIY camper, real SMB poptop, $5700 SoCal

Looks like a great starter SMB for those on a low budget:

Correction: Noticed it has five bolt wheels so it must be an E150, not an E250 like the ad states.

Pretty clean, but a 4.9L 6 cylinder? Interesting?

I was looking at this one yesterday. Only reason I didn't post it here was because I forwarded it to a few friends who I thought might be interested and didn't want to create competition for them.

Seems like a good strategy would be to buy that with the intention of just driving it until it dies and only upgrading stuff that could be transferred to a new van. A used PH top is worth like $3k-$3.5k right? When that van dies just transfer the PH top to a new van that is worthy of some more heavy investment. Or if you decide the van setup isn't for your style, you should be able to sell the used top no problem and recoup most of the cost!

The 4.9 liter straight six is a beast of an engine, legendary for lasting forever. They have decent torque too...I'd say at least comparable to the 5.3 V8. Not the best on fuel though...

The 4.9L I6 made almost exactly the same horsepower as the 5.0L V8 -- I've always been kind of puzzled that the V8 was so popular. (The later 4.6L Modular V8 makes substantially more, though.) It's generally regarded as a pretty bulletproof engine. Straight-6 engines are inherently balanced, incidentally -- they don't need balance shafts or counterweights to run smoothly.
