Re: clean 7.3 Quigley Ambo
Interesting, except I thought the 93s were IDI and the Powerstroke didn't debut until 1994 or 5?

Re: clean 7.3 Quigley Ambo
I thought the same thing actually but didn't mention it because I wasn't sure. Plus it had that totally convincing sticker on it that says Powerstroke turbo diesel which threw me. I'm sure somebody will chime in and clear it up. Either way the van looks really clean and well cared for.

Re: clean 7.3 Quigley Ambo
from wiki, so no idea how reliable it is, but a quick search yielded this:
Quote:
The International Harvester IDI (from Indirect Injection) engine is a 4-stroke 8-cylinder Diesel engine used in International Harvester trucks, Ford F-Series pickups, and Ford E-Series vans from 1983 to 1994. The engine had two displacements: 420 cubic inches (6.9 litres), which was used in Ford trucks from 1983 until 1987, and 444 cubic inches (7.3 litres), which was used in Ford trucks from 1988 until 1994 (naturally aspirated) and in 1993 and 1994 (turbocharged). These engines were replaced in 1994.5 by the Navistar T444E (7.3 L) engine, which was also marketed under the Ford Power Stroke name.

but, you look up the vin and get this:

Re: clean 7.3 Quigley Ambo
This is a non-turbo 7.3L indirect injection engine. I had a 1994 model year E-350 with the same engine. Ford did not put the 7.3L "Powerstroke" engine in a van until the 1995 model year, and never put the indirect injection turbo in the van ever like they did for about 1/2 year or so in the pickups. I can't speak for 1993, but the 1994 model had 180 or 185 HP and 385 lb-ft of torque. There were also high-altitude versions that knocked power down to about 160 and torque down accordingly.
These are good engines as long as the supplemental coolant additive was added. Since the 7.3L IDI had high compression like the 6.9L, but thinner cylinder walls, they suffered from cavitation that caused pitting from the cooling passage to the combustion chamber. Coolant additives caused a protective film that prevented this.
They are very simple; outside of the glow plugs, there are maybe three sensor wires coming off the engine.
The engines really wake up with an aftermarket turbo, but those are hard to find these days, especially for the vans.
The E4OD transmission does not hold up well behind these engines. I went through a transmission every 100,000 miles like clockwork.

Re: clean 7.3 Quigley Ambo
Bingo! I thought I had read that about the 7.3 when researching the history and its incarnations through the years a while back. Thanks for the clarification beaker
