Re: Craigslist: 2001 Sportsmobile 4x4 EB
It is a Quigley conversion.
The owner, Doug, got right back to me with specs and pictures. This is pricey, but I've been looking for a couple years, and it seems like this one is very well equipped. I have been searching for a V10, but the 7.3L is very tempting...
Worth it?
Here are the specs:
Sportsmobile EB 50 Series, 4x4, Penthouse Pop Top
2001 Ford E350 Super Duty 1 Ton 7.3L Diesel
63,500 miles, Excellent Condition
Clear title in hand, Clean CarFax report available
Summary:
Very well equipped, nicely upgraded rig, ready to go anywhere. If youve done your homework, you know this is last solid diesel Ford made for their 1 ton vans. You simply cant get a more reliable engine and drivetrain. The Quigley 4x4 conversion provides far better ride and handling than the Sportsmobile in house design available in newer models. This rig has been sorted out over the last 10 years, including lots of custom work, corrections of poorly designed systems, and replacement of cheap RV parts. Custom solar system can sustain the rig even during short winter days, without the need for a generator or engine idling. Never abused, no dents, no damage history. This is a better van than you can buy new. All records, receipts.
Great Layout, 65 headroom, both captains chairs swivel 180 degrees to face rearward for living mode
Seats 4, sleeps 4
Custom child seat anchors welded up for rear bench, quick set up, no seat belt adaptor needed
Specifications:
Engine
7.3L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel
After 2002, Ford introduced several new diesels to their van line, each an immediate failure. Finally, Ford discontinued diesels in their vans, period. Having operated gas powered Sportsmobiles, including the V-10, there is no comparison to the diesel for power delivery, economy, and remote area fuel sourcing.
This engine/drivetrain has been regularly serviced by the factory and local mechanics for oil/lube. It has been fitted with a high flow K&N air filter, and a SuperChip designed to increase torque and fuel economy. The rig regularly achieves 19 mpg. The block heater is used all winter, even though unnecessary in the bay area, greatly reducing lifetime cold starts. A factory Ford tow truck controller gives you total control over engine rpm, alternator output (for high idle charging), and use of the winch and compressor.
Compressor
Fitted with an Extreme Air Magnum continuous duty air compressor, all four tires can be aired up from 15psi to 60 psi in 12 minutes. Mounted to the frame in a custom fabricated steel box, noise is minimized and interior space saved. A 5 gallon storage tank provides buffer for running shop sized air tools and allows operation of the ARB air lockers without the compressor running (safety and speed). Fitted with pressure gauge, quick connects, spare ports in the distribution manifold, and dash mounted switching.
