I thought about buying one in 2011 or so, when the prices were still, ahem, soft. But I need to tow, and they are highly valued.
Samba is a pretty good guide for pricing. GoWesty has used rigs too.
I have a transaxle building friend with a small shop, who builds 1 or 2 VW 4wd Sycro transaxles per month, supplying for a couple of local shops who do the popular Vanagon/Subaru engine conversions. His fully built, all the known issues fixed, custom geared boxes are not cheap. But for what those rigs are worth, the customers demand high quality at whatever the cost. A lot like SMB owners.
He and I are both pretty impressed with the prices those things fetch these days, crazy money as he says.
On the other hand, I know a fellow VW guy who has driven a three different VW campers from California to Panama, ferried around the Darrien Gap and Columbia, then onward to the southern tip of South America. I've talked at length with him, he's certainly impressed with their capability, especially the 4wd Westy variety.
