They're easy to find as long as you're in a Big 5. Nobody else seems to sell them as far as I can tell.
As far as cooking, they cook hotter. They cook better in inclement weather, and seems to use less fuel. In addition those butane canisters store much smaller and don't leak (unlike every propane bottle I've ever unscrewed). They store disconnected within the unit (at least in mine) which is possibly safer. The bottles are so easy to change it doesn't even affect your cooking.
In any case I'd take two of the butane stoves over a double burner propane any day (in fact that's what I use- one for 90% of my meals and cooking and a second for when I need double pots). They do run slightly hotter or colder depending on the manufacturer/year. Mine are probably close to being from different decades and the newer one is like a rocket stove, in fact it's nearly impossible to turn down enough for certain cooking. The older one is closer to a traditional propane, I can turn it down fine but it doesn't hold up in the really strong winds as well.
