I wonder what the law is concerning a used emergency vehicle. Could you leave the all the outside markings and lights in place as long as you didn't use them? Would make camping in one more interesting.

In general you don't want to look like you're impersonating an ambulance.

A friend of mine had to have a talk with some BLM officers after they spotted his school bus driving around with flashing lights on a dry lake bed. Their initial assumption was that they were seeing an ambulance that needed help locating an emergency situation. They weren't particularly happy about this.

I think when they are "civilan-ized" the lights, siren and decals are usually removed. At least the ones I've seen for sale as surplus.

Yeah, usually it's the red and or blues taken out, turned to yellow etc. but all the used ambulances I've seen have the light system in place.

The law on emergency vehicle lights varies from state to state. Some allow you to have whatever you like, others restrict only certain colors or combinations of certain colors. Then there's places like NM where whatever the law lays down doesn't seem to effect peoples behavior much anyway. But it is probably a moot point since I have never seen a US ambulance for sale that has not had it's lights removed.
