My brother in law had one for about a year that had been reconditioned and was actually really nice. It was in the shop about 5 times during that one year so he sold it and got a SMB. I think his went for somewhere around $40K.

They're definitely a labor of love. The thing I've realized in overseeing two higher end modern SMB's and owning a Syncro and a 2wd Westy is that when it comes to repairing the SMB's (diesel), there's little Joe Mechanic like me can do. I mean, to replace one injector cost well over a grand and required hoisting the engine whereas if I need to do that on a Vanagon, it's simple. But Vanagons are woefully underpowered. Thus, the best option is FORD power - even in a Vanagon. http://www.bostig.com
