6.0L issue

OK, next issue. My engine (2007 6.0L. PSD) is hesitating and slightly erratic for a few minutes when I reach speed in town and at freeway speed and finally it settles down. The temp is already getting warm (175/185 on my last check) so I don't think it's just a cold engine. I've began adding Amsoil Diesel Additive for the last few fill ups to no avail. I use quality diesel fuel and doubt there's any contamination (locking gas cap). The van stills runs good, but seems to have a tiny bit less power. Early guesses now are something with the fuel filter or pump, or dirty or failing injectors. I know this in not enough data to garner a diagnosis from anyone here, so I'll bring it to the dealer here next week. Just wondering. Can injectors be replaces without pulling the engine?

It might be something as simple as a pinhole or tear in a CAC boot. That would effect how the turbo which would explain the power loss. Are you getting any codes?

And no, the engine does not need to be pulled to change injectors but the passenger side is a PIA with the engine having to be raised in order to remove the engine mount on that side. Then lowered and that allows enough access to remove the injectors.

If your looking for something to watch while your waiting to get your van looked at here is Ron Huxel's video on getting to dummy plugs and injectors in a van. This video was a huge help when I changed my dummy plugs.

Start with the basics. FICM voltage? Supply line fuel pressure? Or even more basic... Are the filters up to schedule?

If those check out, start looking at ICP and ICP duty cycle. If those check out, then maybe do a cylinder contribution test.

Thanks everyone. I have a bit more to learn here. What are Dummy Plugs?

They block off the opposite end of the cylinder bank from the stand pipes. Each bank is essentially symmetrical so one end of each bank needs what’s called a dummy plug in the end opposite the stand pipe to keep the oil flowing in the proper direction. I know they were known for failure in 05s but not sure about 07.

Got the van in to the dealer service dept today. Their diagnosis is that the FICM needs replacement. Boy was I happy to hear that, compared to faulty injectors themselves. I authorized the repair and then researched to find how easy it is to replace that unit yourself and save a lot of $$. And, I can have my old one rebuilt for $100 and carry it as a spare. Let's hope they are correct when I pick up my van.

It's real easy. You just need to move the degas bottle out of the way. I sent mine in to Ed at FicmRepair.com for the ultra service with a lifetime warranty. They also have an exchange program while they fix yours. FICMRepair.com - FORD Powerstroke 6.0 FICM Repair, PHP Tuning and Truck Parts

If you want real piece of mind though, I would have the batteries load tested, and the alternator tested, to make sure low voltages weren't the cause of the FICM going bad.

Thanks, Joe and Herb. Got the van back today and it runs like new. I didn't ask if they checked the alternator or battery load. Will do next time I get any service at my regular shop. It was very expensive, $1500 total parts & labor. After researching for replacements modules and instructions on how to replace, it seems quite easy and cheaper to DIY. In fact I'd like to carry a spare unit if I can find a used one to rebuild and keep. Problem is that Ford no longer manufactures this item so the entire service industry must use ones that are aftermarket refurbished. And they ALWAYS want the old unit to rebuild and sell, so it's an exchange. The only way to buy one is pay the core charge and never send the old one back. Thinking about that.....
