Jeremiah,

When I got tired of PO299's I went with the new Garret replacement turbo (and upgraded oil lines) with excellent results. The new turbo has better materials and is less prone to rust caused sticking. My new Garret came with a new, stronger actuator installed for even less chances of problems.

Go for it!

Mike

Called Clay at RiffRaff Diesel and he hooked me up with the turbo, oil tubes and install kit. Great guy, took the time to look up my VIN to figure out it was the 2005.5 model (not that it apparently matters despite the way they are listed).

Also had a good talk about WHY my local shops (because I called another one just to check) price these parts at $2000 and up and how and why they sell them at sub-$800; the essence being when you only do powerstrokes you buy turbos by the pallet, and when you buy turbos by the pallet you need to move turbos not make a killing on each one.

So after talking to Clay I feel a lot better about the whole situation and the parts will go out today.

Awesome! Glad it worked out.

Another pesky little item is the VGT solenoid harness. Ihe plastic connector will no doubt be brittle and dollars to donuts will break when they pull the old turbo. A new harness is cheap insurance and a quick splice. Ford VGT Turbo Control Solenoid Pigtail Harness

The turbo came in Friday before last and I only got my van back yesterday. $645 in labor, right about $1000 in parts sure beats $3000+

Apart from them dragging feet about getting started (free storage?) Everything looks great, there is a little bit of pep was missing, especially when cold and I feel better about addressing the P0299 codes.

Thanks everyone, I owe you guys like $1500 in beer!

I've always had great customer service from Clay. RiffRaff can also make you spend more money as you browse through their website.

Alert: Thread Hijack!

For those not familiar with Garret turbochargers past their own vehicles here's a bit on the company---very impressive IMHO. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garrett_AiResearch

Back to the topic at hand.

Great thread and great info! I'm glad I found this thread as I'll be tackling a low boost issue on Monday myself.
