6.0L oil: possible to change the filter w/out draining oil?

Changed my oil and filter last week. There is a slight bit of weeping around the oil filter canister and I suspect the o-ring is misaligned or damaged.

Anyone know if it's possible to just drain the oil filter canister without draining the entire oil pan? I.e. if I pull the drain plug on the canister and/or remove the filter, is all 15 or so quarts of oil going to come out? Wondering if I should be prepared for a small gusher....

6.0L with SMB conversion. Oil filter is in a vertical orientation with the drain plug on the bottom.

Thanks in advance for any sage advice....

If you pull the drain plug on the filter housing, you will not drain most of the engine, just the filter and some or all of the tubes that run down to the filter.

You could carefully clean the drain plug area with a brake cleaner and then capture the oil that drains out into a clean container and re-use it.

Don't overtighten the filter housing, the o-ring makes the seal and it doesn't have to be very tight.

Also, make sure the o-ring from the last filter did not stay behind on the filter housing. Had that happen once and luckily I figured it out before doing any driving.

You didn't mention if it has 1 or 2 filters so I though I would ask:

Since it's an '04 PSD, does it have the Amsoil Bipass filter package (2 filters) and is it correctly installed?

No Amsoil. Stock setup I believe....

Thanks for the help! Sounds like I can safely drain and remove the filter and inspect the o-ring without having to deal with 15 qts!
