7.3 Any external noise reduction options?

Hello all,

Long time lurker but new member.

I've had gas vans in the past and I've put 100K on my 03 7.3 SMB so I don't need to be sold on the pro's and cons of both...... with that being said I like to spend my time in the back country and it kills me to go roaring up the mountain. With all the engineers on this forum I'm hoping some clever obsessed SMB'r has figured out some tricks that will help.

Bio Diesel: yep that helps
Dynamat for the interior: check
Tuner? Since I'm looking for mostly low RPM crawling up the mountain noise reduction I'm not sure about that one.

I know it's a bit of a long shot but I'm looking to improve my SMB back country experience.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe a torque converter clutch switch would be a good idea. Specialy go up the mountains it is a great option. The engine is not turning with high rpmīs and produce a lot of noice only to heat up your tranny oil.
The 7.3 has so much torque.....after getting moving i always use the switch and i f i need i shift by hand.
Attenting to this your mpg will rise up ;-)
For inside noice it is very importand to seal up the dog house very well. Mine had a small leak and that causes the noice inside rising up like hell.

Re: 7.3 Any external noise reduction options?

ive seen people on here mention additives that they used to help quite down the 7.3, but i cant find the thread where it was mentioned. maybe someone else knows and can chime in??

im with ya though, id love to be able to quiet mine down some if it was possible.

Re: 7.3 Any external noise reduction options?

There's not a whole lot you can do on an older diesel.

If you don't have split-shot injectors (CA-approved vans) then adding them can reduce the clatter, as this was the first attempt at any sort of "pilot-injection". Turning down the injection pressure can also reduce clatter at the expense of efficiency. Cetene booster can also help in some situations too (biodiesel already burns a little slower, so adding it to that fuel probably won't help).

That said.... any quietness gained on a 7.3L probably won't really be noticeable unless you are next to another 7.3L.

Being nearly deaf does have the occasional advantage.
Turning off my hearing aids quiets that beast right down.

Re: 7.3 Any external noise reduction options?

Wrapping the exhaust is a double edged sword since it can tend to rust things up quicker by trapping moisture, but I've heard it can help.

I also believe there are some sound dampening kits for your hood that may help as well. Does your hood still have the stock noise barrier / dampener material?

There's one I haven't thought of.... I'll have to check it out. THX
