Have one in my Ex, that was there when I bought it. Definitely gives you firm shifts, but no complaints whatsoever, and was a major selling point in my buying that particular Ex.

I work with a guy that has a 2001 trk with 340k on his 7.3. It always make me feel a bit better about having a high mileage rig when you see ahigh mileage still going.

I agree, I'm not exaggerating when I say my 7.3 runs as good at 215K as it did at 50K. The van itself has held up well also, with no problems other than a seat belt return spring that started working intermittently...and thats it other than tires and a couple sets of brakes.

One of our former members Bbasso, who may still be a member but sold his van, drove a 7.3 to about 600k miles before engine failure. Those engines are tractor-trailer tough, you just get to a point around 500k or so where the chassis start to break down. We always used E250s at work with the old straight 6 300s in them, and they too would run forever but the chassis would start to fall apart. I can personally attest to this as my old work buggy took me to 478k before they replaced it, and someone else drove it for awhile after that.

SMB won't do the 4x4 conversion. Besides not wanting to warranty their new parts on a "high" mileage van, they also don't carry a lot of the components they used on the 7.3 anymore. You also can't get the 46gal tank they used to offer unless 15-20 of us approached Transferflow to do a batch build.

And I would stick with the 7.3!

Colorado Camper van will do your 4x4 conversion on any mileage van, and I bet a few others will as well.

It went to almost 700K and then I bought it. The engine never failed, the IDM was full of water!! We replaced the 7.3 anyway and now it's roaming around trying to rack up another 700K
