Bed Plate Leak

The YURT is in the shop at the Ford dealer in Pocatello to fix a bed plate leak and possibly a new turbo.

Had it in last April and they said I had a small leak but not enough to worry about then. My check engine light came on in late November so I took it in and told them to check on the leak while they had it in the shop. My extended warranty was coming to an end on December 18th. They agreed that it was leaking and should be fixed while it was under warranty. They had been waiting for parts until I got the call today with the news that they were ready to go. The warranty would cover everything except the time it took due to the Sportsmobile add-ons. They only mentioned the 4 wheel drive components, that if they had to be moved then I would have to pay for that. They estimated 10 to 15 additional hours. They didn't mention a cost for removing the bumper, winch, lights, etc. unless that was included in their estimate as 4 wheel drive parts.

They also are talking about replacing the turbo, also under warranty. They were gong to let me know once they pulled the engine.

I've searched other threads and I don't see where anyone mentions that they had to pay for extras. It looks like the extended warranty covered everything, or at least most everything.

I know many of you have had the same work done. Did anyone else have to pay extra ($1,000 to $1,500) for the Sportsmobile add-ons?

Re: Bed Plate Leak

That sounds really high. Taking off a 4WD axle doesn't take any more time than a 2WD axle (not sure why they would take it off anyways....). Bumper mounts are the same, so it should only be some extra time for wiring that does not have quick-connects, and maybe oil lines if the filter was relocated.

Re: Bed Plate Leak

MK, I had mine done last year. Like you, it was towards the end of the warranty period. I have a Road Armor bumper with six lights and the Warn winch. My dealer was very nice to me and since the stock bumper would have to be removed, they didn't add anything in for the extra weight or wires. Nothing that actually has to do with 4WD need to be removed. Since you mentioned turbo I assume it's a 6.0L. With the engine being removed, I suggest that you replace the head bolts with ARP studs (and stud grease), and consider replacing the head gaskets if you have any miles on the rig. I also replaced the EGR stuff with Bulletproof Deisel parts. All that work came to about $2K more, but it's a deal while the engine's out. Search for my lengthy thread here about my experience.

Re: Bed Plate Leak

^ That is very good advice. There are may worthwhile upgrades that would save a lot of total labor if you did it while the engine is out anyways. I highly recommend the BulletProof diesel stuff. ARP studs area must if you may ever up the HP.

Re: Bed Plate Leak

Thanks for the advice, both of you. I talked to the dealer today and it sounds like the only thing he was possibly charging me extra for was the removal of the 4 wheel axle. He's not sure it would have to be moved, but thought he'd let me know just in case.
It is a 6.0 so I have been talking to him about the EGR parts. What all comes with a Bulletproof Diesel kit? I've heard of changing out the valve with a stainless steel ring/valve.

I'll read your post for more info Jeffrey.

Thanks for your responses.

Re: Bed Plate Leak

There are a couple of different BPD kits:

- BPD EGR cooler and Ford oil cooler
- BPD EGR cooler and BPD independent oil cooler
- BPD EGR cooler delete with Ford oil cooler or BPD oil cooler

When you talk about replacing the valve with a SS ring, I'm guessing you mean an EGR delete and replacing the EGR valve?

Costs will vary greatly depending on which kit, ~$2k-5k.

Re: Bed Plate Leak

Mike, I wish I knew what I was talking about! I don't even pretend to know much about engines and engine parts. I thought I heard that there is a ring within the valve that can be replaced with stainless steel or maybe they were talking about the entire valve. I've read that cleaning the valve is only a temporary fix and they recommend replacing it entirely. I've had the valve cleaned once, early this year. That's when they noticed the bed plate leak originally.

I looked at the BPD web page to learn a little more. Does it do any good to just replace the EGR Cooler and/or the EGR valve without buying the entire $2k to $5k kit?

Thanks for everyone's help.

Re: Bed Plate Leak

To your original question, I was not charged extra due to 4wd components or bumper / winch set-up. Mine was done twice. The second one seems to be holding as it has been a few years now.

Re: Bed Plate Leak

I wonder if the "ring" you heard about is actually the Unison-Ring in the turbo? It can rust up, but only under two conditions: 1) short cycling the engine (turn on, move van, turn off without fully warming up) or 2) leaking EGR cooler.

If the EGR system is upgraded to be more robust, then the need for a SS unison ring is greatly reduced. There are also tricks to clearaneing the stock unison-ring to it won't bind up just form a little carbon.

Re: Bed Plate Leak

PS - I would be careful about requesting any sort of EGR delete with a dealer. They are not allowed to do it (actually nobody is, but dealers are checked more often) and you may get flagged in the system as a potential emissions violator, which the requires that all subsequent dealer visits include an emissions component check before performing warranty work.
