Re: Bullet proof question (again)

I read this thread with horror. I just can't imagine. I better run out RIGHT NOW and happily put $150 worth of fuel in the old 460 before I forget what I just read.

Re: Bullet proof question (again)

yep, that's the one. I'd source the parts yourself if you can; the repair shop will most likely add 20 or 30% to those prices.

The oil cooler rebuild kit is much cheaper than buying the whole thing. I'm guessing they do it anyway, but make sure they hot tank or clean your intake manifold.

And a good custom tuner should be able to work his magic as well as adjusting the transmission shift points (firmer and crisper) and still have it make the emissions code. And you will get more bang for your buck with your FICM tune which adjusts the fueling but not timing. And you may need it anyway with a non-OEM turbo.

Re: Bullet proof question (again)

Don't forget DaveB that less that 5000 miles after doing a stock turbo replacement with a Wicked Wheel mod + an SCT custom tune of unknown HP rating I went back to the shop with total head gasket failures and warped heads on both sides. An Engine pull, 2 "NEW" Gen 3 heads, ARP studs and gaskets was about $11,000. The point is many people state that the OEM program and a better turbo does not gain you anything and regaining the power this engine should have with a tune is a crap shoot on your head studs. A catch 22 times 2!

Side Note - some shops (like mine) won't guarantee parts the customer provides.

86Scotty - fill up a couple of Jerry cans while you are at it!

Re: Bullet proof question (again)

Dave, when I had my work done earlier this year my mechanic suggested to replace the high pressure oil pump 'threaded port'. It was either the inlet or outlet of the pump. I can't find my paperwork right now or I'd get you the exact part call out. It was a $60 part and he said it was a weak point on the 6.0. You might ask your mechanic about it.
Hope this helps.

Mike

I'm guessing there is more to this story

A mild economy tune is 65rwhp. If you had a race tune written then I can see you blowing the heads. Did the EGR cooler go first? Anyhow, I'm no expert but a non-OEM turbo is going to need some tuning to work properly. It doesn't have to have added HP. And you could have it turn the EGR off. It's worth it just for the improved shift points. IMO.

Re: Bullet proof question (again)

I'll probably copy this thread and send it to him... I do think I'll have to purchase most of the parts through them for the warranty but for the life of me I can't figure out why the turbo cost so much. 2300 bucks??? I just want to make sure they are using good parts.

Thanks so much guys.
