Crate 3.5L EcoBoost is over $9,000! Also considering they won't offer it in the Transit cutaway, and had to de-tune it for the vans, makes me think they have some duty-cylce concerns for heavy rigs.

I briefly, VERY briefly, toyed with the idea of a Ford Coyote engine swap for my Bronco. The price tag on that engine, while not $9,000, was enough to make me quickly give up on that idea.

Legality of the engine swap aside, I think diesel smog checks only apply to '98 and newer diesel vehicles so this could probably fly under the radar.

I like the idea of the swap, but you would never recoup the cost so don't bother trying to rationalize it that way. If you want to do it, go for it, but only if it's something you want for non-financial reasons.

Herb
Certainly not rationalizing that way it solely. I know I'd never totally recoup costs. However, Getting 9ish mpg (without pulling anything) with a 25 gal tank is not so fun. We want to pull 2 Harleys and hills are a bitch already. I'm thinking more power and mileage would be really nice. Maybe I should get a larger gas tank and just suffer on the hills. I've got some money to spend though if it is doable. Just wondering about how much is needed?

What exactly is going to happen with a CA smog check if I were to convert? It won't pass at all? Why does the vin matter if the guy checking it knows it was converted? We can't override the machine? It's not like it's against the law, is it?

Re: Can I change my engine from gas to diesel

Have you thought about finding a somewhat newer 7.3PSD van and putting your 4WD stuff on it and selling your existing van with the 2WD leftovers?

No smog issues and it may be cheaper/easier.......

Not even for a second. It took me years to find the one I have. Makes me tired just thinking about it. Thank you for the thought though.

Re: Can I change my engine from gas to diesel

Brother in-law just swapped an old 1.6 gas motor for a modern TDI in his '91 Westy Syncro and when he took it to CA DMV they said no way could this get smogged. Not sure if/how others have been able to smog their diesel swaps.

A gas to diesel swap is likely more work and expense if that wasn't obvious from everyone's posts here....

Sounds like the van is special…BUT, why not keep it as your easy traveler and getting a 4x4 SMB for the more adventurous trips?
