Can I change my engine from gas to diesel
I suck at searching and I'm probably in the wrong section. I'm sorry. However, I'd like to do this so if can, how big can I go? Need more power and fuel economy. 1994 e250 351 4x4. Thank you.

Anything can be done... but it would cost you a lot more than any savings on gas mileage. A lot more.

Legality of the engine swap aside, I think diesel smog checks only apply to '98 and newer diesel vehicles so this could probably fly under the radar.
I like the idea of the swap, but you would never recoup the cost so don't bother trying to rationalize it that way. If you want to do it, go for it, but only if it's something you want for non-financial reasons.

Careful. It still may be required because the VIN will still pull as a gas-powered vehicle.

Yep, good catch! DMV renewal will be based on the VIN, so unless you go through the full, California smog referee to validate the swap, you'd be stuck. I was just thinking of the smog requirements for a diesel, not about the host vehicle.

Re: Can I change my engine from gas to diesel
A new diesel with the full scrubber (like a 2013+ Cummins 6.7L) would easily pass, but then you'd be looking at way more cost and complexity. Anything pre-'08 would probably not pass the particulates or NOx test.

Re: Can I change my engine from gas to diesel
Maybe a reason to start looking for a new van??? I've actually thought about going the other way around...diesel to gas, as in the new cutaway project.

Ahhh, but maybe you should get a new cutaway and convert it to EcoBoost. Ford's even replacing the V8 in the Raptor with a V6 EcoBoost. Not sure I like that, but the V6 EcoBoost supposedly puts out 450hp. Probably at high rpm though, not necessarily beneficial at slow engine speeds. I'd like to see a HP/Torque vs RMP chart.

Recalling an old adage that is applicable here:
"Speed costs money son, how fast do you want to go?"
Anything is possible...
