Check Engine light and OBD II Code P0171 and P0174

I am getting OBD II Code P0171 and P0174. 190K on the van and its a 2001. I took it to a mechanic and they reset the light and cleaned a sensor in the intake. 250 miles later, the check engine light is back on with the same codes. I took it back and they replaced the sensor and 200 miles or so later, check engine light is back on. Before I go back again, i thought I would post..

Any Ideas?

There is a twist to the story. When I got the van I also got two "vapor canisters" I installed on on the drivers side (the one with the electrics) and hooked it up but I still have one spare and that worries me.. mechanic says the van only had one ( i told him I had the extra one) but not sure why I was given two! - Long story.. the van has had a checkered past ...

Thanks

Well, Make/Year/Engine/etc.
Codes are……..
P0171 = Fuel Trim System Lean (Bank 1)
P0174 = Fuel Trim too Lean (Bank 2)

Test your fuel pressure. If fuel pressure is low, injector volume will be low and hence the lean burn.

Mass Air Flow sensor is also a good place to start..........

BTW a 2nd vapor canister is required to meet emissions when a larger tank is installed (like the TF 46 gallon) so if you have the larger tank, that is why there are two canisters. They can be installed in series for more fuel tank capacity.

Re: Check Engine light and OBD II Code P0171 and P0174

We have to mention the basics first, make sure you have a new fuel filter, clean air filter etc. Then do the fuel pressure test and if it’s OK check the MASS Air Flow sensor for dirt or grime, if it doesn’t see the air going past it, it won’t tell the computer it needs more fuel and both banks (Sides Of The Engine) will be to lean. After that you may have to check for an intake air leak with a smoke test.

You will need a fuel pressure test gauge and associated hoses and fittings. It will connect directly to the fuel rail.
