Checking ATF level

When my van is cold, the ATF reads above the top of the "H" mark. When I drive it 20 miles, shift through the gears, leave it in neutral and check the fluid, it registers below the "C" mark. What is going on???!! Seems like it should be the other way around due to fluid expansion...

Re: Checking ATF level

There is some sore of special way to check trans fluid level. Sure someone will chime in with the procedure.
As for your level differences, my guess would be that when you check level after driving, everything inside is then filled and therefore showing a lower level.

Re: Checking ATF level

I think you have to be idling when you check it, so if you're checking it with the engine off for the "cold" reading that might explain it.

Re: Checking ATF level

My "Diesel Suppliment 3rd Printing (2005)" simply referred me to the Owner's Guide. My attention span is such that I'm going to go back to ignoring my transmission fluid.

Incidentially I thought this was interesting, if irrelevant:
Quote:
When the batteries are disconnected or new batteries are installed, the
transmission must relearn its shift strategy. As a result, the transmission
may have firm and/or soft shifts. This operation is considered normal and
will not affect function or durability of the transmission. Over time, the
adaptive learning process will fully update transmission operation

Just changed my transmission fluid and filters and was checking the fluid level on the dipstick. I noticed for the first time that right below the crosshatched area at the bottom of the dipstick, where the fluid level is supposed to be, it says "Cold". Nothing else there.

A few months ago, a shop replaced my dipstick because they broke off the yellow handle while working under the hood. I'm wondering if the new dipstick is different. Length the same??

Mine measures 58.5 inches from the center of the crosshatch area to where I've shown on the photo below.

I've got an '07 with the 6.0 diesel. Would someone with the same setup measure their dipstick and post the length from a stock dipstick?

I did say I have an '07 with the 6.0 diesel and it only comes with one transmission. It's a 5R110W.
But I should have been a bit more explicit.

Mine reads 58.5" from where your photo points to the center of the Hot crosshatch area. I have a 2005 6.0 PSD 5r110 just to confirm. I can post a photo if that would be more helpful to you.
