Cost to replace rocker arms and lifters

My van has a cluttering and knocking sound when starting engine (2006 V8 5.4 with almost 160k on the clock) esp when cold or haven't started in a while. The clutter goes away but the knocking volume slowly goes down but still present at a lower volume after engine running for long period s of time. Mechanic diagnosed the issue as lifters and rocker arms. Quoted 1900.00 for repair. Labor was approximately 1300.00 of the 1900.00. I think that's insanely high but I don't know if that is or is not in the ball park? Any info appreciated.

Imho I'd have at least three mechanics give their advice & quotes.
Second, the timing chain tensioner could be a problem, I've only encountered it once being a problem... but could be in your situation.

And the triton motors depend on specific weight oil, what do you have in it?

The van is currently at the mechanic. I wont be able to pick it for a few days due to my work schedule and distance to the shop. The engine clatter goes away pretty quick but the knock persists longer and after driving awhile its turns from a knock to more like a tick tick sound. Cant tell where the clatter comes from since Im in the drivers seat when I hear it. The knock and tick tick sounds comes from the area near the front passenger seat like right behind the tire / wheel well. The mechanic said if you change one you should change them all. I believe the quote was for 10 hours of labor which is 1390.00 plus parts.

Definitely need more opinions.

I use the standard motor weight for high mileage vehicles.

I do have a audio recording of the knocking but not the clatter or tick tick sound. Not sure how to post it.

Woah! Where do you live to have a $139 shop rate??
Due to magnitude of what they're proposing (not just the cost) I'd get other bids/diagnoses on the work too. Inconvenient, but may be worth the effort

There's no such thing as a standard motor weight, especially for high mileage vehicle. Sorry to break the news,
It's either the correct weight oil or not. Such as 5/30 or 15/40 etc....

I do not recall the actual motor weight. Its what is recommended per Ford.

Lifters can clatter, but I never heard one knock. That's usually something more serious like a rod or main bearing. Either one of these can be caused by low oil pressure, has that been checked with a mechanical gauge? If a lifter is bad, the cam will need to be checked too. If your mechanic is certain its a rocker arm, will he gaurintee it will fix the problem? Before sinking a ton of money into that engine, consider the cost of a replacement, low mile used one. These motors are known to go hundreds of thousands of trouble free miles, but once in a while one goes South prematurely, so I wouldn't be afraid of a used one. I'd get another opinion. Best of luck
