Diesel 6.0/7.3 L vs Gas V8/V10

Having only driven a smb with 7.3 L power diesel I"m curious what the pros cons are with diesel vs. gas v8/v10... I've always been under the impression that with diesel you are getting a more powerful, longer lasting engine with better mpg.. Is there more to the story? I'm in the market for a van right now and am finding some pretty good deals on vans with lower mileage 5.4 L V8... Should I stay away from these?

The 5.4L is not a bad choice. Some prefer the 6.8L V10 for more power, but the 5.4L does fine. See the thread:

Re: Diesel 6.0/7.3 L vs Gas V8/V10

I have a 5.4 and a 7.3 now, had a 6.0. I've driven them all, converted them all, spent many many hours weighing the options with guys. My opinion is that it depends on how you'll be using the van. If you tow a lot or plan a full interior, diesel or V10 for sure. Diesel will have a higher initial cost as well as maintenance thru its life. Gas will be cheaper to maintain, but will cost you more in the fuel dept.

My 5.4 is a pass van that doesn't tow, so its fine. 35" tires, 4.88 gears. I have occasionally towed 3-5k locally, so it will get the job done if asked.

Do some calculations, initial cost, x miles a year, oil change & preventative maintenance, est MPG's. It may take quite a few years to make up the difference!

I doubt I will be towing anything but I live in UT and will be taking it up steep inclines frequently for skiing/mtn biking/camping trips. Also plan on converting to 4x4 with 6 in lift at least. My neighbor is selling a 99 2wd with a 5.4 v8 EB with full interior. I guess I outta try and take it for a test drive.
