E350 P0657 code and transmission shift issues

This is a 6.0L diesel, 2005, which just had the EGR delete, new oil cooler, etc done on it by Gillette Diesel in Draper, UT. I drove it from SLC to ABQ with no issues. On the way back tonight the transmission began to not shift properly (would not shift into OD, would not down-shift when in town, even when putting the lever in 1, 2, etc). The issue seemed to resolve itself every time I shut it down and then re-started the engine.

A code reader at the local auto parts store showed P0657, which engine codes.com reveals as "The ECM has detected an interruption to the transmission control solenoids"

I don't know what or where to look. I am not mechanically inclined unfortunately. Can I continue to drive this thing tomorrow or I should I have it looked at ASAP. Fluids are clean and at proper levels (less than 3000 miles on a transmission flush).

It also had another code, P0401 but I am assuming this is due to the EGR delete.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: E350 P0657 code and transmission shift issues

First off, maybe check for missing ground straps? Its one component that can affect the transmission electronics and could easily be missed doing an EGR job. If you don't see anything wrong there, check all the engine harness connectors. I'm not sure I would drive it. If it loses communication at the wrong time (like while making a shift) there's a couple clutch comminations that can grenade the transmission if the clutches don't all engage and disengage at precisely the right moment.

Re: E350 P0657 code and transmission shift issues- Stranded

Thank you very much for your reply. Now does anybody know a good transmission shop in Santa Fe New Mexico area? One that can get me in ASAP. I have tried precision and Alex service safety Lane. All are telling me two days out. I dread going to the Ford dealership but that's where I'm headed now

If anyone has any hook ups please call me at 801-940-2434.

Re: E350 P0657 code and transmission shift issues

Good luck! My SMB started throwing codes in Sante Fe two years ago on our cross-country trip. Ford dealer couldn't take us for 10 days. Ended up getting in at Firestone near the mall, and they did a crummy job (I was desperate, what can I say...).

Hopefully somebody local will chime in.

Re: E350 P0657 code and transmission shift issues

I'm not sure this should necessary be a tranny shop kind of repair. I really don't think that's the root of the problem. The electronics rarely have problems inside the transition, its usually upstream somewhere. I actually think a Ford dealer is a not a bad place to start, but maybe there's other 6.0 specialty shops nearby?

Keep in mind the transmission does not have its own TCU. It is controlled by the engine's PCM, so the transmission signals run through the main engine harness.

A shop without a proper 6.0 diagnostics terminal (like Ford IDS) could have a really hard time properly diagnosing it.

You are correct. Ford fixed it right away, finding a chaffing wire under the dog house. There was even a TSB about it. I'm impressed to say the least about the local ford dealer.

Thank you all for your replies and vast knowledge!

Great ending!

Sounds like a good Ford dealer to know about - would you mind sharing their name?
